How we made it happen
Throughout this course we have learned various design
methods as well as learned how to work in teams in order to make collective decisions.
In order to portray our educational message we all contributed to creating a
concise message about “Bringing Back the Shad” that viewers attending the Philadelphia
Flower Show could be drawn to and identify with. After finalizing our message
we were able to begin constructing the design created by the class of the
previous semester, which consisted of a three level wooden shad ladder which was
pumped with water, metal shad fish, a hanging shad from the ceiling of our
exhibit, and plants and trees surrounding the ladder and the outside gates of
our space. We were each assigned to a different design divisions which
consisted of Administration, Creative Details, Construction, Logistics, Plants,
Public Relations, or UX/Interaction design As a whole, we all contributed time
and effort to make sure the plants, water feature, tools, planters, and gate
were handled with care and each plant was individually planted. The
administration team made sure we had the proper transportation to fit and move everything
to and from the exhibit and provided us with equipment rentals to help the
construction team build the benches and water feature. The creative team used
wood burning techniques to draw shad fish designs into the back of our water feature
and painted planters for the trees, as well as a side canvas that was places on
the water feature. When the show began we took shifts to assemble, monitor,
maintain, and educate the public about our educational message. The
UX/Interaction design team installed iPads that presented more information
about the Shad fish and how the public could get more involved with getting the
Shad back to the Brandywine River.

Now that the Philadelphia Flower Show has ended for this year, we will be working on presenting new designs for our upcoming theme. We will be using our design ideas to create a design for next year’s flower show exhibit using a local non-profit organization as our client. The client we work with will be the basis of our next exhibit’s educational message. Throughout this processes we will be interviewing, gathering information on the non-profit group in order to successfully create a design that will clearly represent the journey of our educational message. By creating site inventories, and considering the best layout to engage the public, we will work to create one final iteration of our ideas. We have listened and learned from several guest speakers who have educated us about how to construct 2D sketches, balance in designing a successful landscape, and are beginning to learn how to 3D print our finalized models.
